As busy as she is, Mary will take time to celebrate holiday traditions with her family and friends on our beautiful islands of Sanibel and Captiva. Originally from Chicago, Mary celebrates her Polish heritage with a Christmas Eve feast that begins with the Christmas wafer, oplatek. Before the meal begins, Mary and her family gather around the table to begin the ritual. The eldest member present holds the oplatek, a large thin wafer made of unleavened flour and water and breaks off a piece. The remaining wafer is passed on to the next person while a prayer for loved ones is said. Each person then eats the wafer and bids each other good wishes for the holidays. This beloved Polish tradition, started in the 10th Century, is followed by a feast reflecting Mary’s extensive culinary skills. The menu will include fish, potato mushroom soup, pierogies, and for the brave, pickled herring!
While Mary will forego her usual Monday morning pickleball match, expect to see her strolling the beach with her family, enjoying the sun and shells on Sanibel and Captiva! Then she will spend a relaxing afternoon, enjoying some Christmas cookies while watching her favorite holiday movie, “Miracle on 34th Street”.
