Have you ever driven over the Sanibel Causeway and realized you were breathless from taking in that view? Every time I return to Sanibel, I count my blessings that I am able to enjoy this slice of paradise.
And, like many of us, I have taken that causeway for granted. But no more! Who would have thought that the island would only be accessible by boat after Hurricane Ian? Thankfully, the Florida Department of Transportation worked its magic and made the causeway safe to drive within a few short weeks of significant Hurricane Ian damage. It is no surprise, then, that the “Hurricane Ian Sanibel Island Emergency Access” project is one of the top 12 contenders for the Grand Prize and the Peoples Choice Prize of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials “Best Transportation Achievements of 2023”!

So many kind people ask “What can I do to help?” in our island recovery. We all want the causeway and islands to look like this again! Here’s one way to help that’s easy and impactful. Its also a great way to say “thank you” to FDOT for this remarkable achievement by voting in the People’s Choice award category. Simply do a web search for “Americas Transportation Awards” and scroll to the bottom of the screen. Select “Hurricane Ian Sanibel Island Emergency Access” and submit your vote. Daily online votes will be accepted until 11:59PM ET, Tuesday, November 14. Both the Grand Prize and the People’s Choice Awards come with $10,000 cash awards for a charity or transportation-related scholarship of the winners choosing.
